Shoreham Port.
Turning the Tide: Sustainability in Action.
Welcome to our seventh blog. On the coast at Shoreham Port, we are working to improve our environmental impact, from community-led marine conservation to low-carbon innovation across our operations. As a Trust Port, our purpose is to improve the port for generations to come, and to create opportunities for our valued stakeholders.
In partnership with Sussex Bay, Sussex Dolphin Project, University of Brighton, Adur & Worthing Councils, and Brighton & Hove City Council, we’ve launched the Southwick Reef project - a new habitat installation on the Eastern Harbour Arm designed to boost marine biodiversity. The project will see the installation of textured structures, including living sea wall tiles and intertidal cubes, all engineered to withstand tidal forces whilst creating richer habitats than the traditional harbour wall.
The Reef will be monitored to understand the biodiversity benefits the structures have brought to the area, and as it becomes more established, researchers from the University of Brighton will study its broader social impact, particularly how it fosters community engagement with the natural environment. Local communities will have the opportunity to get involved through community-led monitoring, helping connect our coastal communities more closely with the ocean.
As part of our commitment to enabling low-carbon solutions across our ecosystem, we have installed a new electric shore-power system on one of our busiest fishing wharves. This allows up to 10 vessels to plug into renewable electricity simultaneously, reducing air pollution and carbon emissions.
Elsewhere at the Port, we continue to work with local fishing communities to collect end-of-life fishing gear for recycling into new plastic products via the Sussex Net Regeneration Scheme. The scheme is led by Sussex Wildlife Trust (Chair), Adur & Worthing Councils via Sussex Bay, Shoreham Port, This circular solution removes expensive disposal costs for fishers, diverting waste from landfill and transforming it into items that can be re-used and recycled again and again.
We’re excited to be opening our doors once again for our annual Sustainability Week, taking place from 2nd to 5th July. This year’s programme is packed with opportunities to learn more about sustainability and conservation initiatives happening both at the Port and across your local area. Join us for a series of engaging events focused on important topics such as alternative energy, the B-Corp process, and how we can support our mental health by connecting with nature, concluding the week with an uplifting beach cleanup.
Tickets will be released in the coming weeks - in the meantime, visit our website, follow us on social media, or sign up to our newsletter to stay in the loop. in the meantime, visit our website, follow us on social media, or sign up to our newsletter to stay in the loop.
We are very grateful to our colleagues from Shoreham Port for their continued support, thank you.
Our next Blog will focus around the one year anniversary of Sussex Bay.
